A PGI underlines the relationship between the specific geographic region and the name of the wine, when a particular quality, reputation or other characteristic can essentially be attributed to its geographic origin.

For wines, this means that at least 85% of the grapes used must be grown exclusively in the geographical area where the wine was made.
