Spain<\/strong> is one of the countries with the greatest variety and quality of wines in the world<\/strong>, and this is because of its wide array of grape varieties and terroirs<\/strong>, which make our wines unique<\/strong>. This richness led the Spanish winemaking sector<\/strong> in 2014 to see the need to join efforts to strengthen the image of our wines in international markets<\/strong>. This is how the Spanish Wine Interprofessional Organisation<\/strong> (OIVE) was born.<\/p>\n

In addition to their variety<\/strong> and quality<\/strong>, Spanish wines<\/strong> represent an important part of the economy<\/strong>, both due to the economic value<\/strong> they generate and the number of jobs<\/strong> they create, both directly and indirectly. Spanish winemaking regions<\/strong> have great potential for wine tourism<\/strong>, and therefore new wine tourism infrastructures<\/strong> have sprung up there, such as wineries, hotels, restaurants and shops, which generate jobs as well as important economic value.<\/p>\n

                        MAIN GRAPE VARIETIES<\/h3>\n

                        Winemaking registries currently recognize around 280 grape varieties for wine production<\/strong> in Spain. This number is quite high, but it\u2019s just an approximation, as research in recent years has recognised at least 350 varieties<\/strong><\/span>. Some of these unknown varieties don’t even have a name and are in the process of being recovered. This is a coordinated effort that includes the participation of researchers<\/strong>, with the help of viticulturists, wineries<\/strong> and different experts in ampelography and edaphology<\/strong>. Wines in Spain can be made using a single grape variety or a blend of different varieties<\/strong>, which is the most traditional way of making wine. Below are some of the most commonly used varieties<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

                        SPANISH RED WINE GRAPE MAIN VARIETIES<\/h3>\n

                        Bobal<\/h4>\n

                        Native to the region currently known as DO Utiel-Requena<\/strong> in Valencia, it occupies over 70% of vineyards<\/strong>. It is grown over a large part of the Mediterranean coast<\/strong>. Well-suited to aromatic ros\u00e9s and full-bodied reds.<\/strong><\/p>\n

                        Cari\u00f1ena<\/h4>\n

                        Originally from Arag\u00f3n<\/strong>, where it gets its name. Although there are some questions about their relationship, it is also known as Mazuelo<\/strong> in Rioja and Sams\u00f3<\/strong> in Catalu\u00f1a. It provides acidity and its high tannin content<\/strong> enables wine to age well<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

                        Garnacha<\/h4>\n

                        This native variety is one of the most widespread in Spanish vineyards<\/strong> and, undoubtedly, the most popular<\/strong>. It is also known as Gir\u00f3, Lladonera and Garnatxo<\/strong>. It produces wine with a high alcohol content and moderate acidity<\/strong>. It is very popular now thanks to the typicality that if offers from one terroir or region to the next.<\/p>\n

                        Menc\u00eda<\/h4>\n

                        Used mainly in DO Bierzo<\/strong>, although it is also grown in regions of Castilla-Le\u00f3n and Galicia<\/strong>. Menc\u00eda is one of the five main varieties of native red wine grapes in Spain.<\/strong><\/p>\n

                        Monastrell<\/h4>\n

                        This variety is typical of the Levante<\/strong> region, where it is planted in 80% of vineyards in DO Jumilla<\/strong> and in approximately 75% in DO Alicante<\/strong>. It is very drought resistant. It produces expressive wines<\/strong>, with a high alcohol content and medium acidity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

                        Negramoll<\/h4>\n

                        Especially abundant in the Canary Islands and Palma de Mallorca<\/strong>. This variety is not found in mainland Spain. It produces silky, aromatic wines<\/strong>, with balanced acidity<\/strong>, providing a high degree of freshness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

                        Tempranillo<\/h4>\n

                        A native variety, believed to have originated in La Rioja<\/strong>, this is the most important grape variety in Spain<\/strong>. Tempranillo can be found in approximately 30 DOs<\/strong> and it occupies a quarter of total vineyard area<\/strong>. It has many names depending on the region: Tinta del Pa\u00eds, Tinto Fino, Ull de Llebre or Cencibel.<\/strong> Tinta de Toro is a close relative of this variety.<\/p>\n

                        SPANISH WHITE WINE GRAPE MAIN VARIETIES<\/h3>\n

                        Air\u00e9n<\/h4>\n

                        Originally from La Mancha<\/strong>, this is the most widely grown white variety in Spain<\/strong>. It is also known as Forcallet, Forcayat, Manchega and Lair\u00e9n<\/strong>. It is very drought resistant and adapts well to poor soils. Mid to low aromatic intensity, perfect acidity and a good alcohol content.<\/strong><\/p>\n

                        Albari\u00f1o<\/h4>\n

                        Grape native to Galicia<\/strong>, very commonly used to make wines in DO R\u00edas Baixas<\/strong>. A very aromatic<\/strong> variety which produces silky, fresh wines<\/strong> with a medium alcohol content<\/strong>. The most relevant characteristic is its distinctive fruity character with a wide variety of aromas.<\/p>\n

                        Godello<\/h4>\n

                        Native to the northeast, it is mainly used in Galicia and Le\u00f3n<\/strong>. It is the most important grape in DO Valdeorras<\/strong>. It can result in varietal wines with a high alcohol content that are balanced, with very characteristic, intense aromas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

                        Hondarribi zuri<\/h4>\n

                        Native to the north and the main variety used to make txakoli<\/strong> in the three DOs in the Basque Country<\/strong>. It produces light, smooth wines<\/strong> with a sharp acidity and citrus aromas<\/strong>. (The red version, Hondarribi Beltza, is less commonly grown)..<\/p>\n

                        Malvas\u00eda<\/h4>\n

                        Very widespread in Spain due to its versatility<\/strong>, it is also known as Subirat<\/strong>. It comes from the Mediterranean basin<\/strong>. It is used for both sweet<\/strong> and dry wines<\/strong>. It is often grown in the Canary Islands<\/strong>. It results in golden, slightly bitter must<\/strong>. It is also suitable for liqueur wines<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

                        Moscatel de grano menudo<\/h4>\n

                        Grown mainly in M\u00e1laga and Valencia<\/strong>, it is one of the oldest Mediterranean white varieties. It can also be found in Arag\u00f3n, Navarra<\/strong>, etc. Its sugar potential is high<\/strong>, with a good balance of acidity and intense flavours<\/strong>. Suitable for natural sweet wines<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

                        Palomino<\/h4>\n

                        Especially grown to produce fortified wines in Andaluc\u00eda<\/strong>, mainly in DO Jerez-X\u00e9r\u00e8s-Sherry<\/strong>, to make manzanillas, amontillados, finos and olorosos<\/strong>. It is also known as List\u00e1n, Chipiona and Pinchito<\/strong>. It produces wines with a medium alcohol content<\/strong>, and its best expression is when used to make fortified wines<\/strong>, although it is also being used in modern winemaking in other regions.<\/p>\n

                        Parellada<\/h4>\n

                        Widely used in Catalu\u00f1a<\/strong>, especially to make cavas<\/strong>, it is the finest of the traditional varieties from Pened\u00e8s. It produces fresh white wines<\/strong>, with fresh aromas<\/strong> and a delicate acidity<\/strong>. It is also known as Montonec, Verda Grossa, Martorella and Montonega<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

                        Pedro Xim\u00e9nez<\/h4>\n

                        This is the reigning variety to make sweet fortified wines<\/strong>. It makes up 90% of grape production in DO Montilla-Moriles<\/strong>. Sun-dried grapes are used for the famous sweet PX<\/strong>. It is a very productive variety that is resistant to high temperatures and drought.<\/p>\n

                        Verdejo<\/h4>\n

                        This is the most important variety used to make wines in DO Rueda<\/strong>. This aromatic, fruity variety<\/strong> produces wines with a fairly high alcohol content,<\/strong> with medium\/high acidity<\/strong>, which feature intense aromas<\/strong> that are highly typical of the terroir.<\/p>\n

                        Viura<\/h4>\n

                        The white grape variety most widely used in La Rioja<\/strong>. Also known as Macabeo<\/strong>, in Catalu\u00f1a<\/strong> it is one of the three main grapes in DO Cava<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

                        Xarel-lo<\/h4>\n

                        A grape native to Catalu\u00f1a<\/strong> and used widely to make cava<\/strong>, along with Parellada and Macabeo. It is a very versatile<\/strong> variety, in which floral aromas<\/strong> predominate. It is one of the three typical varieties for producing cava in Catalu\u00f1a.<\/p>\n

                         <\/p>\n

                        There are many other varieties<\/strong> grown on Spanish vineyards<\/strong>. Although less common, some include: Graciano<\/strong> (red) in Rioja, Navarra and less commonly in Andaluc\u00eda where it is known as Tintilla de Rota; Garnacha Tintorera<\/strong>, the only variety with violet flesh, also known as Alicante Bouschet; Maturana<\/strong> (white and red); Prieto Picudo<\/strong> (red), very typical of Le\u00f3n; Rufete<\/strong>, widespread in Castilla y Le\u00f3n, especially in DO Sierra de Salamanca; Trepat<\/strong> (red), very common in DO Conca de Barber\u00e0; and white variety Garnacha Blanca<\/strong>, which is mostly grown in Terra Alta.<\/p>\n

                        International grape varieties commonly grown in Spain include reds Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Pinot Noir and Merlot<\/strong>, and whites Chardonnay, Riesling, Gew\u00fcrztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc.<\/strong><\/p>\n
